RCPI Clinical Neurophysiology HST points calculator

Answer one question for each scored domain. We add up your points with the published rules shown on each step, then show what you could still add before the deadline, with dates. It takes about two minutes.

We'll show your result and email you a copy.

When are you applying?

We use this to date your plan. Applying this round, it works back from the deadline. Applying next year, you get the long-run version instead.

Your score is the total of the domain scores, out of a maximum of 100.

Maximum 13 pointsProfessional Qualifications/Education

Undergraduate performance: - First Class Honours Degree: 8 - Second Class Honours Degree: 5 / - Higher degrees (MD/PhD) in relevant scientific/medical area: 5 - Masters in relevant scientific/medical area: 3 - Additional Bachelor degree or Diploma in relevant area: 2

Each item you can evidence adds its points, up to 13 points for the domain.

Your undergraduate honours class plus any relevant higher degree, masters, or additional bachelor degree or diploma.

Watch out. Only first or second class honours are listed; a pass degree has no line. Higher degrees must be in a “relevant scientific/medical area”.

Caps. Capped at 13 (8 for a first plus 5 for an MD/PhD). One undergraduate class counts. Each listed degree type is counted once here; RCPI doesn’t say whether two degrees of the same type both count.

Maximum 30 pointsRelevant Clinical Experience

- SpR or Registrar Clinical Neurosciences experience: 10 per 6 months - SHO Clinical Neurosciences experience: 5 per 6 months - Other Medical Registrar Experience: 5 per 6 months

Each item you can evidence adds its points, up to 30 points for the domain.

- SpR or Registrar Clinical Neurosciences experience: 10 per 6 months10pts eachHow many
- SHO Clinical Neurosciences experience: 5 per 6 months5pts eachHow many
- Other Medical Registrar Experience: 5 per 6 months5pts eachHow many

Six-month blocks of clinical neurosciences experience (registrar 10, SHO 5) and of other medical registrar experience (5).

Watch out. Count only complete six-month blocks; the form scores “per 6 months”. Neurosciences SHO time scores the same as general medical registrar time.

Caps. Capped at 30, for example three six-month blocks as a neurosciences registrar.

Maximum 10 pointsAudit Experience

- Institutional/National Audit: 5 - Departmental Audit: 3

Each item you can evidence adds its points, up to 10 points for the domain.

- Institutional/National Audit: 55pts eachHow many
- Departmental Audit: 33pts eachHow many

Audits scored by level: institutional or national 5, departmental 3.

Watch out. The form doesn’t say whether each audit counts separately. The calculator counts each one up to the cap of 10, which is our reading.

Caps. Capped at 10. Our reading counts each audit; RCPI doesn’t say whether only one per level counts.

Maximum 10 pointsLeadership/Management

- Formal Leadership achievement: 4 - National Committee membership: 4 - Local Committee membership: 2

Each item you can evidence adds its points, up to 10 points for the domain.

A formal leadership achievement (4), national committee membership (4) and local committee membership (2).

Watch out. The three items add up to the cap of 10, so the calculator counts each once.

Caps. Capped at 10. Each item counted once (4 + 4 + 2 = 10).

Maximum 15 pointsPublication Experience

- 1st Author, International Journal: 10 - Other Author, International Journal: 5 - 1st Author, Local/Irish Journal: 5 - Case Reports, 1stAuthor: 4 - Other Author, Local/Irish Journal: 2

Each item you can evidence adds its points, up to 15 points for the domain.

- 1st Author, International Journal: 1010pts eachHow many
- Other Author, International Journal: 55pts eachHow many
- 1st Author, Local/Irish Journal: 55pts eachHow many
- Case Reports, 1stAuthor: 44pts eachHow many
- Other Author, Local/Irish Journal: 22pts eachHow many

Papers scored by authorship and journal: international first author 10 down to local or Irish co-author 2.

Watch out. A single first-author international paper (10) outscores three local co-authorships (6).

Caps. Capped at 15.

Maximum 12 pointsPresentation Experience

- Oral, International: 5 - Poster, International: 4 - Oral, National: 3 - Poster, National Meeting: 2 - Institutional: 1

Each item you can evidence adds its points, up to 12 points for the domain.

- Oral, International: 55pts eachHow many
- Poster, International: 44pts eachHow many
- Oral, National: 33pts eachHow many
- Poster, National Meeting: 22pts eachHow many
- Institutional: 11pt eachHow many

Presentations by level and format: international oral 5 down to institutional 1.

Watch out. An international poster (4) outscores a national oral (3). Keep the programme or abstract book for each.

Caps. Capped at 12.

Maximum 10 pointsTeaching

- Formal Teaching Role: 5 - Teaching Experience: 3 - Teaching Award: 2

Each item you can evidence adds its points, up to 10 points for the domain.

A formal teaching role (5), teaching experience (3) and a teaching award (2).

Watch out. There’s no line for a teaching qualification or course. A formal role (for example a university tutor post) is worth more than general experience.

Caps. Capped at 10. Each item counted once (5 + 3 + 2 = 10).

  1. RCPI HST Entry Guidance and Advice: Clinical Neurophysiology Shortlisting and Interview Criteria. 2027 HST intake. The page says “Applications for our 2027 Higher Specialist Training (HST) programmes are now closed.” The criteria are HTML tables in the “HST Shortlisting and Interview Criteria & Specialty Entry Requirements” section, not a PDF.
  2. RCPI HST Application Guidance and Frequently Asked Questions. 2027 intake (MRCPI Clinical by 31st December 2026; no documents accepted after the close)

Clinical Neurophysiology is the one RCPI HST form that prints points for every item, so this page has a working calculator. Shortlisting is out of 100: qualifications 13, clinical experience 30, audit 10, leadership and management 10, publications 15, presentations 12 and teaching 10. Applications for the 2027 intake closed at 5pm on 29 October 2026, and in-person interviews are on 2 February 2027. Entry needs completed or final-year BST in General Internal Medicine or Paediatrics.

Where Teach the Teacher counts for Clinical Neurophysiology

Teaching is worth 10, split into three items: “Formal Teaching Role: 5”, “Teaching Experience: 3” and “Teaching Award: 2”. There’s no line for a teaching course or qualification. We claim Teach the Teacher under Teaching Experience, the nearest item, and the panel decides; treat it as a grey area. The course is a live online day (09:00 to 17:00, “6 hours of live teaching with an expert”) and a self-paced course of over 12 hours in 20 modules, each with a certificate. A panel may read “Teaching Experience” as teaching you have delivered, so upload the certificates with a log of the teaching you’ve done. If you already claim Teaching Experience, the course adds nothing to the score.

The bigger prize is a formal teaching role, worth 5: a university tutor post or a named teaching lead role. At interview, teaching is folded into the 20-mark CV category. The 2027 window has closed, so anything new counts towards the next intake.

Rules on the Clinical Neurophysiology form that change a score

Clinical experience is scored in complete six-month blocks: “SpR or Registrar Clinical Neurosciences experience: 10 per 6 months”, SHO neurosciences 5 and other medical registrar 5, up to 30. Neurosciences SHO time scores the same as general medical registrar time. Undergraduate performance lists only “First Class Honours Degree: 8” and “Second Class Honours Degree: 5”, so a pass degree has no line. Publications reward authorship and reach: one first-author international paper (10) beats three Irish co-authorships (6), and the row caps at 15. Presentations cap at 12, and an international poster (4) outscores a national oral (3). RCPI doesn’t say whether each audit or committee counts separately; the calculator counts audits per instance and leadership items once, and says so.

Worked example: a BST3 applicant on 34 of 100

Take a BST3 SHO in General Internal Medicine with a second class honours degree, six months as SHO in neurology and a year as a medical registrar. They have one departmental audit, a local committee seat, a first-author case report, a co-authored Irish paper, a national poster and an institutional talk, and no recorded teaching:

  • Qualifications: second class honours, 5.
  • Clinical experience: one neurosciences SHO block (5) and two registrar blocks (10), 15.
  • Audit: one departmental, 3.
  • Leadership: local committee, 2.
  • Publications: case report (4) and Irish co-author (2), 6.
  • Presentations: national poster (2) and institutional (1), 3.
  • Teaching: none, 0.

That’s 34 of 100. Claiming the course under Teaching Experience takes teaching to 3 and the total to 37, if the panel accepts it. A formal tutor post would add 5 more. RCPI publishes no cut-off, so this total can’t tell you whether you’d be shortlisted.

How the Clinical Neurophysiology interview is scored

Evidence traps

  • There’s no line for a teaching course or qualification. The items are a formal role, teaching experience and a teaching award, so a formal role scores most. - Formal Teaching Role: 5 - Teaching Experience: 3 - Teaching Award: 2 source
