If you’re working on your portfolio for your self-assessment in your application for Internal Medicine Training (IMT), Core Training (CT) or Specialty Training (ST), you’re probably wondering how you can get more points to ensure your interview. There are many avenues for building up your application, but one quick and easy way to get points is through Training in Teaching.

Training in Teaching For Your IMT Application
Firstly, what do we mean by training in teaching and teach the teacher courses?
What Are Teach The Teacher Courses?
Training in teaching is basically learning how to teach, which is commonly delivered through Teach the Teacher courses. Of the many skills that are required to be an effective medical professional, the ability to teach those who are less experienced than you is one of the most important. As you’ll already be aware, medical professionals spend hours of their days interacting with patients, many of whom will have little to no experience in medicine.
Being able to communicate important information to them is essential in your role and is a skill that is equally important in the field of teaching. Therefore, taking on effective teacher training will provide many skills that can be easily transferred to your role in medicine.
As well as all the skills you’ll learn from a training course like this, you will also be able to earn points for various applications to expand your medical training. Points can be awarded for applications in IMT, CT and ST at multiple levels, but be aware that this training has to be separate from your Primary Medical Qualification (e.g. delivered by a certified course provider).
How To Earn IMT Training Points with Teach the Teacher Courses
If you’re applying for Internal Medicine Training, you should be aiming to earn at least 11 points to stand a chance of getting an interview. That can be a lot, especially if you haven’t been in a position to engage with Publications or Quality Improvement. However, Training in Teaching can provide your application with a boost of at least 1 Point.
For IMT applications in Groups 1 and 2, there are two levels of achievement in Training in Teaching that can earn you 1 or 3 Points:
To earn 1 Point, you will need to have completed training that lasts a minimum of 6 hours in a live (synchronous) format. This will need to include some form of certificate as evidence of completion.
To earn 3 Points, you will need a qualification from a university-accredited programme. This must be a graduate-only programme that is worth an equivalent of at least 60 credit points.
Obviously, earning 1 Point is much easier than earning 3 Points, as anyone can attend a Teach the Teacher course to earn this qualification. For example, here at Erudical, we offer a combined live and self-paced course package that provides over 20 hours of teaching.

ST and CT Self Assessment Points From Teach the Teacher Courses
Beyond IMT applications, training in teaching can also support your Core Training and Specialist Training applications in many cases. The application standards for each form of training can differ, where some will award points for your qualifications, while others will label them as essential or desirable.
As well as this, there are a number of speciality and core training options that do not accept teach the teacher courses as a sufficient qualification. These include General Practice, Anaesthetics, Urology, and most other pathways not featured in the list below. These courses also won’t be considered for pathways beyond ST4.

Clinical Radiology ST1
2 Points awarded for training in teaching lasting at least 2 days. Students completing the Erudical Course will qualify for two points.
Histopathology ST1
1 Point awarded for training lasting no more than 2 days. 2 Points awarded for training lasting more than 2 days. Students completing the Erudical Course (both live AND asynchronous) will qualify for two points. Students completing either live OR asynchronous course will qualify for one point.

Audiovestibular Medicine ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Aviation and Space Medicine ST3

Evidence of participation in a teaching course is considered “essential”.
Clinical Genetics ST3
Evidence of attendance of teaching course alongside evidence of teaching experience is considered “desirable”.
Clinical Neurophysiology ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Clinical Oncology ST3
1 Point awarded for training lasting no more than 2 days. 2 Points awarded for training lasting more than 2 days. Students completing the Erudical Course (both live AND asynchronous) will qualify for two points. Students completing either live OR asynchronous course will qualify for one point.
Clinical Radiology ST3
1 Point awarded for training lasting no more than 2 days. 2 Points awarded for training lasting more than 2 days. Students completing the Erudical Course (both live AND asynchronous) will qualify for two points. Students completing either live OR asynchronous course will qualify for one point.
Combined Infection Training ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Dermatology ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Emergency Medicine ST3
1 Point awarded for attendance of “Training the Trainers” (teach the teachers) course. Students completing the Erudical Course (either live or Asynchronous) will qualify for one point.
Haematology ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Immunology ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Intensive Care Medicine ST3
1 Point awarded for attending a basic teaching methodology course. Students completing the Erudical Course (either live or Asynchronous) will qualify for one point.
Medical Oncology ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Medical Ophthalmology ST3
Attendance of a formal teaching course considered “desirable”.
Nuclear Medicine ST3
2 Points awarded for training in teaching lasting at least 2 days. Students completing the Erudical Course (both live AND asynchronous) will qualify for two points.
Occupational Medicine ST3
2 Points awarded for attending a certified “Teaching the Teachers” course. Students completing the Erudical Course (both live AND asynchronous) will qualify for two points.
Rehabilitation Medicine ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Renal Medicine ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Sport and Exercise Medicine ST3
Evidence of training in teaching is considered “essential”.
Vascular Surgery ST3
1 Point awarded for “substantial and interactive qualification” in teaching. Students completing the Erudical Course (either live or Asynchronous) will qualify for one point.
