What Anaesthetics CT1 scores
Invitations depend on the MSRA and on capacity: “Online interviews are conducted and applicants are invited based on achieving the required MSRA scores AND agreed interview slot capacity”. “A cut off score will be implemented for the MSRA which will be effective from Round 1 2027 onwards.”
Of the clinical judgement station, the page says: “This station assesses the domains of Clinical Judgement and Decision Making, Reflective Practice and Working Under Pressure.” In the general station, “Applicants will be asked questions around their training to date and commitment to specialty. Some questions will their experience on working in and leading teams.”
“Once an applicant accepts an Anaesthetics post they will be withdrawn from any other specialties within the same recruitment round and will not receive any further offers from them.” In 2025 there were 6,770 applications for 539 posts, a ratio of 12.56 (Medical Hub competition ratios).
NMERC: material for Commitment to Specialty
An anaesthesia talk at NMERC is part of your training to date, so it is something real to discuss under Commitment to Specialty. It does not earn marks itself. NMERC on Saturday 14 November is before the 19 November close.
“In 2027, applicants will only be able to submit a maximum of five applications per recruitment round.” Other specialties in the round, such as IMT (IMT points calculator), Core Surgical Training (CST portfolio guide) and Clinical Radiology ST1 (Radiology ST1 portfolio points), score a national presentation. NMERC is an online national conference on Saturday 14 November 2026. It is free to submit and free to present, and it is open to any doctor or medical student. Every abstract is reviewed before it is accepted. Submit at nmerc.org/submit, and read more on the NMERC page.
A note on courses
The official interview page says: “ANRO and the RCoA do not recommend that potential applicants book commercial courses, sign up to websites or purchase advice and guidance books specifically aimed at doctors undertaking the Anaesthetics selection process.” Our Teach the Teacher course is not interview preparation, and it scores nothing in CT1 selection. It is a teaching-methods course with a certificate. It counts later: in Anaesthetics ST4, Domain 6 gives 1 point if you “OR attended a Teach the Teachers course, Generic Instructors Course or similar.” See Anaesthetics ST4 self-assessment points.
