Teaching is central to anaesthetics — theatre teaching, simulation, and the close supervision of trainees. A Teach the Teacher course formalises those skills and adds strong, evidenced material to your portfolio and CV.

How Anaesthetics ST4 scores teaching

Anaesthetic training is built around one-to-one teaching and simulation, and you will be expected to supervise and teach throughout. Formal training in teaching demonstrates that you have developed these skills deliberately — valuable for ARCP, for educational roles, and for your longer-term consultant portfolio. Erudical enrolment also includes a place at NMERC 2026, where an oral or poster presentation can score in the presentations domain of specialty applications that score presentations (how presentations are scored).

Anaesthetics ST4 scores a teaching course directly. Domain 6 (Teaching) awards 1 point for having “attended a Teach the Teachers course, Generic Instructors Course or similar”; the 2-point tier requires organising or delivering teaching, and 3 requires a postgraduate certificate in education.

For Anaesthetics ST4, the guidance says attendance at a Teach the Teachers course “can count in either domain 6 or domain 9 but not both”. Domain 6’s 1-point tier is also met by “some experience in formal teaching for health professionals”, so if you already score there, the course adds nothing in Domain 6. You can count it in Domain 9 (Continuing Professional Development) instead, as one educational event of 1 day duration, uploading both certificates and the programme for the day. There it moves you up a tier only if it is the event you are missing for 2 or 3 points. Attending NMERC can be a separate 1-day event in the same domain: the guidance says “Any meeting, symposium, or conference relevant to anaesthesia or ICM may be credited here”, and the panel decides whether NMERC qualifies. Domain 9 still applies for August 2027 entry.

So the course is worth at most 1 point for Anaesthetics ST4. An attended course cannot go higher in Domain 6: every tier above it needs you to be delivering or organising teaching, or to hold a university award.

Figures are from the 2026 self-assessment documents; the 2027 version for Anaesthetics ST4 was not published when checked on 10 October 2026. See our teaching points by specialty guide for where a course scores directly.
