Teaching is central to intensive care — simulation and the close supervision of trainees. A Teach the Teacher course formalises those skills and adds strong, evidenced material to your portfolio and CV.

How ICM ST3 scores teaching

Intensive care training is built around one-to-one teaching and simulation, and you will be expected to supervise and teach throughout. Formal training in teaching demonstrates that you have developed these skills deliberately — valuable for ARCP, for educational roles, and for your longer-term consultant portfolio. Erudical enrolment also includes a place at NMERC 2026, where an oral or poster presentation can score in the presentations domain of specialty applications that score presentations (how presentations are scored).

ICM ST3 scores a teaching course directly. Domain 6 (Teaching skills, scored 0–4) awards 1 point for having “attended a basic teaching methodology course”; 2 requires providing regular teaching or instructor certification, and 3 requires over half a formal teaching qualification.

For ICM ST3, the point is either/or: teaching healthcare professionals or medical students “with evidence of formal, positive feedback” earns the same 1 point, so the course adds a point only if you currently score 0 in Domain 6. ICM names “A certificate of attendance or completion of teaching methodology course” as acceptable evidence. For ICM, the Erudical course is training in teaching methods only.

So the course is worth at most 1 point for ICM ST3. An attended course cannot go higher in Domain 6: every tier above it needs you to be delivering or organising teaching, or to hold a university award.

Figures are from the 2026 self-assessment documents; the 2027 version for ICM ST3 was not published when checked on 10 October 2026. See our teaching points by specialty guide for where a course scores directly.

What the Erudical course covers

The Erudical Teach the Teacher course is a live, tutor-led day and a self-paced course of over 12 hours covering adult learning theory, session design, delivery, feedback and evaluation — which you can apply to simulation and to the teaching you do in intensive care.

How it strengthens your portfolio

Keep your certificate and pair it with a reflection on a simulation or teaching session in intensive care. Training plus applied reflection is exactly what supervisors and ARCP panels look for.
