ACCS Emergency Medicine ST1 · Round 1 recruitment

ACCS Emergency Medicine ST1 2027 application: what’s scored

There is no self-assessment score, but the interview has a portfolio station. Here is how ACCS EM selects, and what to bring to it.

Applications close 4pm, Thu 19 Nov 2026

  • 527 doctor reviews
  • 4.7/5 rated for relevance

How you’re selected

  • “The MSRA will be weighted 40% and the interview score 60% of the total score.”
  • Interview: “2 stations 10 minutes each one will be a portfolio station and the other will be a clinical/ethical station”
  • MSRA shortlisting only if eligible applicants exceed interview capacity (about 882).

What ACCS EM scores

“There will no longer be a Core Training option”, so 2027 entry is at ST1. The interview “will assess your commitment to the specialty and communication skills.” One of the two stations is a portfolio station. No scoring descriptors for it are published, so no points can be given for any item.

The person specification lists as desirable “Experience of research within Emergency Medicine”, “Experience of audit and quality improvement within Emergency Medicine” and “Experience of teaching within Emergency Medicine”.

“We will not accept MSRA scores from any previous sittings”. In 2025 there were 5,081 applications for 357 posts, a ratio of 14.23 (Medical Hub competition ratios).

NMERC: something real for the portfolio station

An emergency medicine talk at NMERC gives you a recent, concrete piece of work to discuss at the portfolio station. The panel scores your answers, not the conference, so no mark is attached to it. NMERC on Saturday 14 November is before the 19 November close and months before the interviews.

It also helps elsewhere in the round. “In 2027, applicants will only be able to submit a maximum of five applications per recruitment round.” Specialties such as IMT (IMT points calculator), Core Surgical Training (CST portfolio guide) and Clinical Radiology ST1 (Radiology ST1 portfolio points) score a national presentation. NMERC is an online national conference on Saturday 14 November 2026. It is free to submit and free to present, and it is open to any doctor or medical student. Every abstract is reviewed before it is accepted. Submit at nmerc.org/submit, and read more on the NMERC page.

Teach the Teacher, looking ahead to EM ST3

At ST3, the Emergency Medicine self-assessment gives 1 point under Question 6 for a “‘Train the Trainers’ education supervision course”. We claim our Teach the Teacher course under that wording, and the assessors decide. It is not scored at ST1. See EM ST3 self-assessment points.

ACCS Emergency Medicine ST1 2027: common questions

Is ACCS Emergency Medicine entered at CT1 or ST1 in 2027?

At ST1. The recruitment page says “There will no longer be a Core Training option”.

How is ACCS Emergency Medicine ST1 scored?

Two 10-minute online stations, one a portfolio station and one a clinical/ethical station. “The MSRA will be weighted 40% and the interview score 60% of the total score.” If more eligible people apply than the roughly 882 interview places, the MSRA decides who is interviewed.

Does the portfolio station score teaching, QI or presentations?

No points or descriptors are published for the portfolio station. The desirable criteria name “Experience of teaching within Emergency Medicine”, and audit, quality improvement and research within Emergency Medicine, and the interview “will assess your commitment to the specialty and communication skills.”

Can I use an MSRA score from an earlier year?

No. “We will not accept MSRA scores from any previous sittings”.
