Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the only UK specialty that asks for two degrees before you even apply, and the ST1 self-assessment is scored line by line. For the August 2027 intake the scoring has changed: there is no longer a separate “Training in Teaching” domain, so a teach the teacher course on its own no longer adds self-assessment points for OMFS ST1. This page sets out what does score, and where Erudical still helps.

OMFS ST1 2027: a teach the teacher course scores 0. A national oral presentation scores 5, a national poster 4.

How OMFS ST1 scores teaching in 2027

The current OMFS ST1 self-assessment guidance (NHS England, page reviewed 29 September 2026) scores teaching in two domains, and attending a course is not an option in either. “Qualification in Medical Education” starts at “Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in education (minimum 60 credits) – Points – 1”, then 2 for a PG Diploma and 3 for an MSc. “Postgraduate Medical Teaching experience” scores “As the principal organiser of a relevant course (completed by application closing date) – Points – 4” or “Contribution to a course as faculty member – Points – 2”, for a course run “over a day/consecutive day with both pre- and post-course feedback”, and the guidance adds “Online courses excluded”.

So the Erudical course scores 0 in the OMFS ST1 self-assessment. Earlier rounds had a separate training-in-teaching domain where a short course scored; that domain is not in the guidance for the 2027 intake. If you read otherwise elsewhere, check the date of the source. Confirm the current wording in the OMFS ST1 self-assessment guidance, NHS England Medical Recruitment, and see the full points table by specialty.

Where points are still open: presentations

The presentations domain is worth up to 5. The guidance scores “I have given one or more oral presentations at national or international medical meetings after being invited/selected to do so – Points – 5” and a national or international poster at 4. Two conditions matter: a slot you only got by paying a fee is scored under a separate option (“In situations where you are solely presenting or showing your poster because you have paid a fee select this option”), and the evidence “must include summary of presentation and certificate of presentation (slides will not be accepted)”.

Erudical enrolment includes a place at NMERC 2026, a national medical education and research conference on Saturday 14 November 2026. Submitting an abstract is free, abstracts close on 31 October 2026, and presenters receive a certificate. OMFS applications close at 4pm on 19 November 2026 and the evidence portal runs from 23 November to 10am on 21 December 2026, so a presentation given on 14 November is in time. Whether any meeting counts as national is for the verification panel; see how presentations are scored.

Why OMFS applicants still take the course

The course is about teaching well, and OMFS interviews and portfolio reviews still ask about teaching you have delivered and how you know it worked. The live day gives you a structure for planning a session, collecting pre- and post-session feedback and writing it up as evidence, which is the kind of record the teaching-experience domain asks for if you go on to organise or teach on a course yourself. It also carries 18 CPD hours (6 live, 12 self-paced) and the NMERC place above.

Frequently asked questions

Does a teach the teacher course score for OMFS ST1 in 2027?

No. The 2027 guidance has no training-in-teaching domain. Teaching scores only for a PG Cert in education or higher, or for organising or teaching as faculty on a course (online courses excluded) with pre- and post-course feedback.

Did it score in earlier years?

Yes. Earlier OMFS ST1 guidance had a separate “Training in Teaching” domain where brief training scored. That domain is not in the guidance for the August 2027 intake.

What is the quickest way to add OMFS points before applications close?

A presentation. A national oral scores 5 and a national poster 4, as long as you were selected rather than paying for the slot and you can upload a summary and a certificate of presentation.
