GP ST1 2027 application: what’s scored

Nothing on your CV is scored for GP ST1. Selection is the MSRA alone, so this page sets out how it works and where a presentation still helps.

Applications close 4pm, Thu 19 Nov 2026

  • 527 doctor reviews
  • 4.7/5 rated for relevance

How you’re selected

  • MSRA only: “A subsequent face-to-face or virtual assessment at a Selection Centre will not occur.”
  • “Applicants who achieve a band of 1 in either paper will be deemed unsuccessful and will not progress further with their application.”
  • Offers across the UK are “based on their performance in the MSRA.”

What GP ST1 scores

GP ST1 has no self-assessment, no portfolio and no interview. The MSRA is the whole selection. “Successful applicants will be considered for appointment across the whole of the UK, based on their performance in the MSRA.” The 2027 person specification lists “Experience of teaching.” as a desirable criterion, but nothing outside the MSRA is scored.

The MSRA has two sittings in 2027. The February one is “Reserved for applicants who apply to Core Psychiatry and/or General Practice only.”

In 2025 there were 20,995 applications for 4,276 GP ST1 posts, a ratio of 4.91 (Medical Hub competition ratios).

Where NMERC still helps a GP applicant

An NMERC talk earns nothing in GP ST1 selection. It can still matter in two ways. First, most applicants apply for more than one specialty, and “In 2027, applicants will only be able to submit a maximum of five applications per recruitment round.” The same Round 1 window includes specialties whose self-assessment or portfolio does score a national presentation, such as IMT (IMT points calculator), Core Surgical Training (CST portfolio guide) and Clinical Radiology ST1 (Radiology ST1 portfolio points). A talk given at NMERC on Saturday 14 November is done before applications close at 4pm on 19 November, so it can go into those applications.

Second, teaching and presenting build the CV you will use for later posts. NMERC is an online national conference on Saturday 14 November 2026. It is free to submit and free to present, and it is open to any doctor or medical student. Every abstract is reviewed before it is accepted. Submit at nmerc.org/submit, and read more on the NMERC page.

GP ST1 2027: common questions

Does GP ST1 score a portfolio or self-assessment?

No. GP ST1 has no self-assessment, no portfolio and no interview in 2027. “Successful applicants will be considered for appointment across the whole of the UK, based on their performance in the MSRA.”

Does a teach the teacher course count for GP ST1?

Not for selection. The 2027 person specification lists “Experience of teaching.” as a desirable criterion, but nothing outside the MSRA is scored, so a teaching course adds no marks.

Is there an MSRA cut-off for GP ST1?

Yes, in effect: “Applicants who achieve a band of 1 in either paper will be deemed unsuccessful and will not progress further with their application.”

When do GP ST1 applications close?

Round 1 for August 2027 opens at 10am on 22 October 2026 and closes at 4pm on 19 November 2026. The February 2027 MSRA sitting is “Reserved for applicants who apply to Core Psychiatry and/or General Practice only.”
