What O&G ST1 scores

The MSRA “will make up 33.3% of your final score.” It is also used to shortlist: “MSRA score will be used to shortlist out the lowest scoring applicants and bypass the highest scoring applicants to offer stage.”

“The interview will consist of 2 stations and will last approximately 30 minutes.” The structured interview has four questions worth up to 10 each:

  • “Research and teaching Maximum score per panel member 5 Maximum score per question 10”
  • “Quality improvement measures Maximum score per panel member 5 Maximum score per question 10”
  • “Experience outside of medicine, leadership and teamworking Maximum score per panel member 5 Maximum score per question 10”
  • “Commitment to specialty Maximum score per panel member 5 Maximum score per question 10”

In 2025 there were 4,945 applications for 297 posts, a ratio of 16.65 (Medical Hub competition ratios).

NMERC: a real example for the research and teaching question

Presenting a QI or teaching project at NMERC gives you a concrete, recent example for those questions. The panel scores your answer, not the conference. It does not help the top 75, who bypass the interview. NMERC on Saturday 14 November is before the 19 November close.

“In 2027, applicants will only be able to submit a maximum of five applications per recruitment round.” Other specialties in the round, such as IMT (IMT points calculator), Core Surgical Training (CST portfolio guide) and Clinical Radiology ST1 (Radiology ST1 portfolio points), score a national presentation. NMERC is an online national conference on Saturday 14 November 2026. It is free to submit and free to present, and it is open to any doctor or medical student. Teach the Teacher: an answer now, a point later

A teaching-methods course gives you something specific to say in the research and teaching question. It also counts at ST3, where the O&G self-assessment scores 2 for “Attended a Train the Trainers course, Generic Instructors course (GIC) or equivalent”. See O&G ST3 self-assessment points.

How is O&G ST1 scored?

“Your final MSRA and online interview score is out of a maximum of 150 (50 marks from the MSRA, 100 marks from the online interview).” You need at least 50 out of 100 at interview to be appointable.

Does O&G ST1 score research and teaching?

Yes, as an interview question rather than a CV item. “Research and teaching” scores up to 10 (5 from each panel member), and so do quality improvement, leadership and teamworking, and commitment to the specialty.

Can you skip the O&G ST1 interview?

Yes, with a high MSRA. “The top 75 ranked applicants based on total MSRA score will achieve the bypass.” The lowest MSRA scorers are shortlisted out.

Checklist before you apply

  • Sit the MSRA: it is a third of your final score and decides the bypass.
  • Prepare one example each for research and teaching, QI, leadership and commitment.
  • If you have a QI or teaching project, present it at NMERC on 14 November.
  • Choose your other applications (up to five) before 19 November.
