Method and sources
Your score adds up the option you pick in each domain, using the published rules shown on each step. "Could still add" uses only steps the guide allows before the deadline. No competition figures are shown for Irish HST. Last checked 30 October 2026.
- RCPI Entry Guidance and Advice: HST Shortlisting and Interview Criteria & Specialty Entry Requirements. 2027 intake. The page says "Applications for our 2027 Higher Specialist Training (HST) programmes are now closed." Criteria are published as tables on the page, not as PDFs.
- RCPI HST Application Guidance and Frequently Asked Questions. 2027 intake ("Applications for our Higher Specialist Training (HST) programme will open 01 October 2026.")
RCPI’s Faculty of Paediatrics scores HST General Paediatrics in two stages. If it needs to shortlist, it uses five rows that add up to 20: Professional Qualifications/Education 5, Publication & Audit Experience 5, Progression in Clinical Practice and Suitability 6, Leadership & Management Experience 2 and Teaching Experience 2. The table has no total line, so 20 is the sum of the rows. Then comes an in-person interview out of 100, and places follow your interview rank. RCPI publishes only the maximum for each row, so the panel decides each mark. The calculator at the top of this page is a self-estimate: you rate yourself against each row and it adds up your own estimate, not RCPI’s score. The 2027 window ran from 12pm on 1 October to 5pm on 29 October 2026 and is closed. Interviews are on 23 and 24 February 2027, and MRCPI Clinical has to be passed by 31 December 2026.
Where Teach the Teacher counts for General Paediatrics
We claim the course on the Teaching Experience row, which is worth 2 of the 20, and the panel decides. The row reads “Candidate demonstrates experience with teaching, outside of day-to-day teaching of medical students or higher qualification in teaching”. The Erudical course is a live online day with “6 hours of live teaching with an expert”, plus a self-paced course of over 12 hours in 20 modules. That’s training in how to teach, not a postgraduate qualification and not teaching you delivered, so it works best next to teaching that sits outside routine student teaching: simulation for nurses, a teaching series for SHOs, or a programme you organise. The 2027 window has closed and RCPI takes no updates, so the certificate counts from the next window, whose dates aren’t published yet. At interview, teaching is discussed inside Research/Audit/Teaching (20 of 100). The panel scores that domain as a whole. We claim the course there as formal training in teaching; it carries no fixed marks, and the panel decides what it adds.
Rules in the General Paediatrics criteria that change a score
Nothing can be added once applications close. RCPI’s FAQ is blunt: “No, the Admissions Team is not in a position to accept any documents or updates to applications following the close of applications.” Proof matters: publications, presentations and audit carry “proof of same will be required”, and the FAQ adds “Verifiable proof will be required. Please follow the instructions on the application form.” Whether an abstract scores is left to the form: “This depends on the specialty.” The clinical row ends with “Appraisal review”, so your appraisals feed the biggest row on the form. Teaching awards sit under Professional Qualifications/Education, not Teaching Experience. And the shortlisting marks only get you into the room: “Posts are allocated by the NSD(s) taking into account rank at interview and available places.” The interview has five domains of 20: CV – career to date, Research/Audit/Teaching, two clinical questions, and Suitability/Professionalism/Interview Performance.
Worked example: a BST3 paediatric registrar
Take a BST3 registrar with MRCPI Paediatrics, a PubMed case report, two national posters, a closed-loop sepsis audit, the SHO rota, ward teaching of medical students and a monthly simulation session for nurses. The rota fits the leadership row’s own example (“Rostering duties”). The nurse simulation sits outside day-to-day teaching of medical students, so it belongs in Teaching Experience; the ward teaching of students doesn’t. Because RCPI publishes no marks within rows, we can’t put a number on this profile. Adding the Teach the Teacher certificate gives the teaching row a course beside the simulation sessions, worth up to 2 at most if the panel credits it, from the next window.

Shortlisting (2027 intake)
Your score is the total of the domain scores, out of a maximum of 20.
The table has no total row; the five row maxima (5, 5, 6, 2, 2) add up to 20. Shortlisting is used only if needed: "The Faculty of Paediatrics may be required to shortlist applicants, as outlined below:". Ranking for places comes from the interview: "Posts are allocated by the NSD(s) taking into account rank at interview and available places." Self-estimate (owner ruling 30 Oct 2026): RCPI publishes only the maximum for each row, so the calculator asks you to rate yourself on each row (none, some, good, strong) and adds up your own estimate. These steps are ours, not RCPI's; the panel scores the real marks.

Evidence traps
- Nothing can be added after the close. A paper accepted or a talk given after 5pm on 29 October 2026 waits for the next window.
No, the Admissions Team is not in a position to accept any documents or updates to applications following the close of applications.
source - Routine bedside teaching of medical students doesn't fit the Teaching Experience row, which asks for teaching beyond it.
Candidate demonstrates experience with teaching, outside of day-to-day teaching of medical students or higher qualification in teaching
source - Your appraisals are part of the clinical row, so a weak appraisal can cost marks however good the CV looks.
Candidate shows evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with the totality of the period of training, e.g. experience in specialty, attendance at specialty clinics etc. Candidates must show their suitability for a career in Paediatrics and their career trajectory. Appraisal review
source - Every publication, presentation and research item needs proof uploaded with the application, and RCPI reviews only the documents it asks for.
Verifiable proof will be required. Please follow the instructions on the application form. ... Please only upload the requested documents. Additional documents will not be reviewed.
source - The shortlisting marks only get you to interview. Places follow your interview rank, so the interview is where the ranking is decided.
Posts are allocated by the NSD(s) taking into account rank at interview and available places.

General Paediatrics HST questions, answered
How many points is teaching worth for RCPI HST General Paediatrics?
2 of the 20 shortlisting marks. The Teaching Experience row reads “Candidate demonstrates experience with teaching, outside of day-to-day teaching of medical students or higher qualification in teaching”. At interview, teaching is scored inside Research/Audit/Teaching, one of five domains worth 20 each out of 100.
How is HST General Paediatrics shortlisting scored in Ireland?
Five rows add up to 20: Professional Qualifications/Education 5, Publication & Audit Experience 5, Progression in Clinical Practice and Suitability 6, Leadership & Management Experience 2 and Teaching Experience 2. RCPI publishes only these maxima, so the panel decides the mark within each row. The Faculty of Paediatrics shortlists only if it needs to.
When are the HST General Paediatrics interviews for 2027?
In person on 23 and 24 February 2027. Applications ran from 12pm on 1 October to 5pm on 29 October 2026 and are closed, and RCPI accepts no documents or updates after the close.
Does a teach the teacher course count for HST Paediatrics in Ireland?
We claim it on the Teaching Experience row, and the panel decides. The row asks for teaching outside day-to-day teaching of medical students or a higher qualification in teaching, and a one-day course is neither on its own, so pair it with teaching you organise or deliver. It counts from the next window, not the 2027 one.
Do I need MRCPI to apply for HST General Paediatrics?
Yes. RCPI’s FAQ says “All HST candidates must have successfully passed their MRCPI Clinical Examination relevant to their speciality by 31st December 2026. There are no exceptions to this requirement.” and “MRCP UK and Membership from other Irish Training Bodies are not considered equivalent, unless otherwise specified.”
