Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the only UK specialty that asks for two degrees before you even apply, and the ST1 self-assessment is scored line by line. Teaching is scored twice: once for the teaching you have delivered, and once — in a domain of its own — for training in how to teach. That second domain is where a Teach the Teacher course scores, and OMFS is unusual in caring what format it took.
How OMFS ST1 scores teaching
The OMFS ST1 self-assessment has a separate scored domain, “Training in Teaching”, worth up to 5 points. It sits alongside — not inside — the domains for teaching experience and for formal qualifications, so training in how to teach is scored in its own right. The tiers run: a master’s level or higher qualification in teaching, such as a PG Cert or PG Diploma, scores 5; “substantial training in teaching methods lasting between five and twenty days” scores 3; “brief training in teaching methods lasting no more than two days” scores 2; “brief training in teaching via online modules only” scores 1; and no training scores 0. Every tier adds “AND I can provide evidence to demonstrate this”.
Erudical scores 2. The live, tutor-led day is what lifts the course out of the online-only band at 1 — a self-paced course on its own, however many hours it runs to, sits in that bottom tier by the wording. Very few specifications care about the format of your training. OMFS is one that does, which makes the live day worth a whole point here that it is not worth anywhere else.
The separate “Qualification in Medical Education” domain starts higher up: a Postgraduate Certificate of at least 60 credits scores 1, a PG Diploma of at least 120 credits scores 2, and an MSc scores 3, each “Evidenced by certificate”. A short course does not score in that domain, so do not claim it there. Confirm the current wording in the OMFS ST1 national recruitment self-assessment, and see the full points table by specialty. What to submit as evidence
Both scoring tiers end with “AND I can provide evidence to demonstrate this”, so the certificate is doing real work here. Submit a dated certificate of completion showing the provider, the CPD accreditation and — this is the part that matters for OMFS — that the training included live, tutor-led teaching rather than online modules alone. Put both Erudical certificates into a single PDF so the live day and the self-paced hours read as one course.
Live or self-paced for OMFS?
For OMFS, do the live day. This is the one specialty in the table where the format changes the score rather than just the experience: online modules alone are explicitly the 1-point tier, and training that includes a live day is the 2-point tier. Both are included in the £199, so there is nothing extra to buy — just book a live date at checkout rather than leaving it until later.
