Scored in the self-assessment under “Training in teaching”: “I have had training in teaching methods which is below the level of a PG Cert or PG Diploma” = 1 point, where “Training should be delivered with a duration of at least six hours (i.e. a one-day course) of synchronous (live) teaching time.” A PG Cert or PG Diploma scores 3. The person specification also lists “Evidence of training in teaching.” as desirable.

Core Surgical TrainingCT1Category D
Scored by letter, not points — see the wording

Scored by letter, not points. Category D: “I have undertaken some educational activity focused on learning to teach” — “This would include any form of educational event focused on learning the skills of teaching – such as a training the trainers course online or otherwise”. It sits in the Teaching experience domain as an alternative to regular teaching, so it cannot be claimed on top of it, and evidence must be “A certificate for the educational event focused on learning how to teach”.

A teach the teacher course does not score here — see why

The only route by which a teaching qualification scores is inside the postgraduate certificate domain, which counts a “PG Cert in Education”. The separate Teaching domain scores delivery only and has no training-in-teaching tier, so a short teach the teacher course does not score.

Domain 3, Teaching and Training, Category C: “Evidence of other training in teaching methods after study of at least 2 days (such as Train the Trainers)”. The verifier converts categories to scores: “A 4 / B 3 / C 2 / D 1 / E 0”. Category A is “Hold a formal teaching qualification awarded at postgraduate level, for example: masters, CILT, PGDip, PG Cert”, so a postgraduate qualification scores 4.

A higher teaching qualification scores 2.

OMFS has a separate scored domain, “Training in Teaching” (maximum 5), alongside its qualification domain. Its 2-point descriptor is “I have had brief training in teaching methods lasting no more than two days AND I can provide evidence to demonstrate this”, above “brief training in teaching via online modules only” = 1 and below “substantial training in teaching methods lasting between five and twenty days” = 3. The live tutor-led day is what lifts a course out of the online-only band. More on OMFS ST1 teaching points.

Separately, the “Qualification in Medical Education” domain starts at “Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in education (minimum 60 credits)” = 1, rising to a PGDip (minimum 120 credits) = 2 and an MSc = 3, each “Evidenced by certificate”. A short course below PGCert level does not score.

The 2026 scoring guide has 13 scored categories and no training-in-teaching domain, and it states that “Diplomas, Associated Diplomas and Certificates are not awarded points”. Domain D scores teaching experience only — “1 point = Informal teaching / 2 points = Formal teaching appointment” with cumulative points for feedback and for teaching in paediatrics or cardiology. Courses are scored separately and “Courses must be clearly relevant to paediatric cardiology”. The 2027 person specification removes the teaching-and-training phrase altogether.

How To Earn IMT Training Points with Teach the Teacher Courses

If you’re applying for Internal Medicine Training, you should be aiming to earn at least 11 points to stand a chance of getting an interview. That can be a lot, especially if you haven’t been in a position to engage with Publications or Quality Improvement. However, Training in Teaching can provide your application with a boost of at least 1 Point.

For IMT applications in Groups 1 and 2, there are two levels of achievement in Training in Teaching that can earn you 1 or 3 Points:

Obviously, earning 1 Point is much easier than earning 3 Points, as anyone can attend a Teach the Teacher course to earn this qualification. For example, here at Erudical, we offer a combined live and self-paced course package that provides over 18 hours of teaching.

1point

To earn 1 Point, you will need to have completed training that lasts a minimum of 6 hours in a live (synchronous) format. This will need to include some form of certificate as evidence of completion.

The teach the teacher route
3points

To earn 3 Points, you will need a qualification from a university-accredited programme. This must be a graduate-only programme that is worth an equivalent of at least 60 credit points.

ST and CT Self Assessment Points From Teach the Teacher Courses

Beyond IMT applications, training in teaching can also support your Core Training and Specialist Training applications in many cases. The application standards for each form of training can differ, where some will award points for your qualifications, while others will label them as essential or desirable.

As well as this, there are a number of speciality and core training options that do not accept teach the teacher courses as a sufficient qualification. These include General Practice and Core Psychiatry, which shortlist on the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment alone, and specialties such as Paediatrics, Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and Paediatric Surgery, whose frameworks credit only a postgraduate qualification in education. The Find your pathway table states which is which, and quotes the wording.

Training in teaching can support your application at CT1, ST1, ST3 and ST4. Every pathway that benefits from Training in Teaching in the application process is listed in Find your pathway, above.

Training in Teaching For Your IMT Application

If you’re working on your portfolio for your self-assessment in your application for Internal Medicine Training (IMT), Core Training (CT) or Specialty Training (ST), you’re probably wondering how you can get more points to ensure your interview. There are many avenues for building up your application, but one quick and easy way to get points is through Training in Teaching.

In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know about taking a Teach the Teacher course to get the points you need. Since 2018, our course certificates we issue have been used and accepted by hundreds of applicants across a wide variety of specialties in the UK and overseas*

Firstly, what do we mean by training in teaching and teach the teacher courses?

What Are Teach The Teacher Courses?

Training in teaching is basically learning how to teach, which is commonly delivered through Teach the Teacher courses. Of the many skills that are required to be an effective medical professional, the ability to teach those who are less experienced than you is one of the most important. As you’ll already be aware, medical professionals spend hours of their days interacting with patients, many of whom will have little to no experience in medicine.

Being able to communicate important information to them is essential in your role and is a skill that is equally important in the field of teaching. Therefore, taking on effective teacher training will provide many skills that can be easily transferred to your role in medicine.

As well as all the skills you’ll learn from a training course like this, you will also be able to earn points for various applications to expand your medical training. Points can be awarded for applications in IMT, CT and ST at multiple levels, but be aware that this training has to be separate from your Primary Medical Qualification (e.g. delivered by a certified course provider).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a PGCert to score teaching points?

No. A PGCert or diploma is only needed for the top scoring tier — a university-accredited, graduate-only programme worth at least 60 credits, which scores 3 points for IMT. A recognised, CPD-accredited teach the teacher course is the accessible route to securing a point.

How long does the training have to be?

For IMT you need at least 6 hours delivered live (synchronous). Several ST1 and ST3 specialties award more for training lasting more than two days — check your row in the table above.

Does an online course count?

Yes, as long as the live element is synchronous and tutor-led. The Erudical live day runs online in a virtual classroom, so you can attend from anywhere in the world.

Do I need a certificate as evidence?

Yes — you need a certificate of completion to upload as portfolio evidence. Erudical issues two: one for the self-paced course and one for the live day.

Does the training have to be separate from my medical degree?

Yes. It must be separate from your Primary Medical Qualification and delivered by a certified course provider.

My specialty is not in the table — what does that mean?

Pathways that are not listed do not award points for teach the teacher courses. General Practice is the clearest example: it has no portfolio or self-assessment stage at all, so there is nothing for a course to score against. Nothing beyond ST4 is considered. Note that Anaesthetics and Urology are listed and do both award a point — Anaesthetics at ST4 and Urology at ST3. Person specifications change, so always check the current one for your specialty.

We have never had the course rejected but we always advise to contact your application administrators to triple-check!
